The NACONEX project textbooks

2000 and 2001 Pro Natura carried through the Leonardo da Vinci project NACONEX together with our partners NEPCon (Denmark), AVENIR (France) and Burnham Beeches in London Corporation (UK). The project included activities as vocational training courses, production of written material etc. The main objective of the project was to provide a platform for experience exchange between workers in the field of nature conservation at European level.

Since the NACONEX textbooks produced in the project have got a wide attention and appreciation we offer download of the articles in pdf-format here!

Butterfly information from Finland

An impressive database with a wide range of organisms can be found on Markku Savelas website. This started as a website about butterflies, but has successively grown. It is still however the information about butterflies that is the most exhaustive.

Species checklists

A variety of lists and other botanical information can be found on http://www.botany.net/IDB/
For information on the botany of Sweden go to Swedish Botanical Society homepage.
A lot of interesting information about mosses can be found on The Mosses Friends homepage.
A checklist of Swedish fungi can be found on the website of the Threatened Species Unit's project Checklist of Swedish fungi, where particularly the Ascomycetes are comprehensively treated.

Coniferous woodland

An excellent source of information about the world's coniferous woodlands can be found on Gymnosperm database. A home page which will not disappoint!

Distribution maps - fungi

Sveriges Mykologiska förening have an online database where you can find maps which highlight the distribution of many Swedish fungal species.
More information about the distribution of fungi can also be found online from Dan Olofssons homepage - amongst other things a searchable database of records.

Woodland Key Habitat Survey is finished - check out the results!

The Swedish Forestry organisations survey of Woodland Key Habitats on privately owned land (outside that owned by large private forestry companies) is now complete. You can look at the results on the net. Click on the area around where you live for an interactive map highlighting the key habitats and the data associated with it.

Vättern slopes

The eastern side of Lake Vättern is characterised by steep cliffs. The geology, topography and climate have resulted in a unique ecology. The Gränna woodland group works in this area to conserve these high nature conservation values.

Stay in a botanical paradise?

Col du Lautaret is a name in the French Alps which allows botanists which have been there to sink into pleasant dreams! The dazzling flora is second to none in this part of the Alps. Nearby lies Parc National des Ecrins with peaks reaching above 4000 metres. Some kilometres east you can find the steppe meadows of Briançon. Over 2400 vascular plants have been recorded by the department Hautes-Alpes. If you would like to visit this wonderful part of the French Alps and meet other botanists, we can recommend the guest house La Brèche where you are in an ideal location for excursions. It is somewhere between a youth hostel and a hotel, where you can find excellent food and good company. This "Gîte de Montagne" as it is called in French, is situated in a picturesque village called Villar d'Arène and is run as a non-profit organisation. Facts:

Capacity, facilities: Room for 45 guests over two floors, divided between 5 rooms with 2 beds, 3 rooms with 4 beds and 4 rooms with 6 beds. Certain rooms have washing facilities and a shower; other parts have these facilities out in the hall. There is a sauna, two garden verandas, the facility to wash clothes, buy tickets for the lifts amongst other things. La Brêche is open all year round and has at least two full time employees to take care of their guests.

Lies: 35 km from Briançon, 85 km from Grenoble

Capacity, facilities: 45 beds distributed on 5 rooms with 2 beds, 3 rooms with 4 beds and 4 rooms with 6 beds. Some rooms are provided with wash-basins and showers, other rooms share these facilities in each floor. There are sauna, two garden terrasses, laundry, possibilities to bye tickets for lifts and ropeways to reduced rates, etc. La Brêche is open all seasons and two full-time employed care for the well-being of the guests.

Situation: 35 kilometers from Briançon, 85 kilometers from Grenoble.
